Standard Necklace Lengths:
Most necklaces standard lengths are listed below, but even if lengths vary you can use the standards pictured to help you visualize how a necklace will fit. If your overall build is larger or smaller than what’s considered “average,” necklaces will fit you differently. Let the lengths of necklaces you already own be your guide to new favourites.
Collar (12-13 Inches/ 30-33 cm)
Collar necklaces lie snugly around the middle of the neck. It works well when wearing V-necks, boat necks, and off-the-shoulder fashions. A collar necklace gives extra attention to the neck area.
Choker (14-16 Inches/ 35-41 cm)
Both classic and versatile, a 14-16 inch choker falls perfectly around the base of the neck, just above the collar-bone. A simple choker necklace matches almost any outfit and just about any neckline. A 16 inch necklace will drape about one and one 1/2 inch below the base of the throat.
Princess (17-19 Inches/ 43-48 cm)
As the most common necklace length, hanging over the collar-bone, the princess necklace is best suited for either high necklines, strap-less or V-neck. This is a popular choice for many wedding and bridesmaid dresses.
Matinée (20-24 Inches/ 50-60 cm)
This length falls to the top of the bust and looks wonderful with a wide variety of necklines. The matinée length compliments professional looks as well as flatters bigger bust-lines.
Opera (28-34 Inches/ 72-86 cm)
The Opera length makes it possible to wear as a single, double, or sometimes even a triple strand. This length works well with a variety of necklines and is versatile enough to transition from day to night. Many chunky and dramatic gemstone necklaces are opera length.
Rope (Over 45 Inches/ 138 cm)
The Rode length is long and dramatic. It is possible to wear as a single, double, or sometimes even a triple strand. This length works well with a variety of necklines and is versatile enough to transition from day to night. Can also be used to wear it single with a knot (in particular pearls like neckalces).
